Power and luminosity (watts and lumens)

When looking for LED lighting, lumens and watts are frequently used interchangeably. For instance, Lm/W = lumens per watt. Watts are frequently used as a measurement of light output. In point of fact, the “perceived power” of light is measured by the number of lumens. The more lumens, the more brilliant the light shows up. The amount of energy you use, which is the amount you pay for on your utility bills, is measured in watts, an electrical power unit. When purchasing LED lighting, it’s important to think about “lumens per watt.”

A particular LED lamp, for instance, can produce 1000 lumens while consuming as little as 9 watts. A comparable incandescent lamp, on the other hand, requires 100 watts to produce the same number of lumens. Dimming lighting controls are becoming increasingly popular, and consumer demand for a smart home is also growing. Having the ability to alter the amount of light in a room is crucial, so dimmers should be used whenever possible. Dimmable LEDs are used in good LED lighting, but it’s important to always check this before buying and don’t assume that all fixtures are dimmable.

Dimming is yet another way to save energy and cut costs at the same time. Other useful terms include low voltage and line voltage. In sockets and junction boxes, line voltage is the standard voltage—220 V in the post-Soviet space and 110-120 V in the United States, Canada, and a few European nations. In this way, line voltage luminaires, truth be told, support the rule of “attachment and-play” – “fitting and play”.

In order to prevent the low voltage bulb from burning out, low voltage lighting typically uses 12V or 24V and requires a transformer to step down the mains voltage. Low-voltage lighting transformers are either integrated into the light fixture (the lamp driver) or separate from it (the power supply for LED strips).

Rating L70/LM80 As previously mentioned, L70 simply represents the amount of time it takes for a light source to degrade to 70% of its initial output. The lumen depreciation of LED light sources can be measured using an approved test method called LM80. “Listed as DLC” When a commercial building switches to LED lighting, energy companies in many countries offer discounts. Energy companies use DLC, a list of approved LED luminaires, to offer these discounts. To receive the discount for switching to LEDs, your luminaire must be on this list.

IC Appraised IC means “protecting contact”. In an insulated ceiling, such as stretch or plasterboard suspended, an IC-rated recessed luminaire can be used without overheating. When looking for fixtures, it’s important to know what these terms mean as more and more homes and businesses are switching to LED lighting.
