Why your company should be certified.

You’ve probably heard of certifications owned by women, minorities, or veterans, but you might be thinking, “Why bother?”

There are a number of reasons why clients and prospects hire me to prepare certifications: I’ve decided to share a few of these with you so that you can learn more if you find yourself in one of these situations.

One of my current clients is undergoing the certification process because if they become “certified,” they will be able to subcontract more work to a general contractor. Although they lack the certification to prove it, my client is a woman-owned business. The General Contractor will happily refer more customers to them once they become certified as a Woman Business Enterprise and enter their information into the SBA’s repository for Woman-Owned Small Businesses.

They wouldn’t, since everyone benefits. The general contractor can meet their requirements for small and minority-owned businesses while continuing to do business with a company they already trust. My clients have also chosen to become certified so that they can collaborate with other businesses to bid on contracts. Teaming Agreements are often made so that two or more businesses can work together to win a big contract that each company might not be able to win on its own.

These circumstances may indicate that you are working with a company that would otherwise be considered a rival; however, as the abbreviation T.E.A.M. suggests—together, everyone achieves more My clients typically choose certifications because they want the opportunities that certification affords. Keep in mind that I said opportunities, not guarantees.

Certifications are neither a benefit program nor a guarantee for the company that holds them. However, certifications are intended to level the playing field in areas where it has been discovered that it is uneven and to provide support in areas where it has been discovered that it is lacking.
